What Y2Mte Does

Y2Mte converts a YouTube link into a file you can keep. Paste the URL, choose whether you want audio or video, and download the result. That is the whole process — there is no account to create, no app to install, and no software to keep updated.

It runs entirely in your browser, so it works the same on Android, iPhone, Windows, macOS and Linux. If you have typed y2mte com or y2mte.com looking for a specific site: this is Softlookup's own converter of that kind. It is not affiliated with any other y2mte-named service, but it does the same job.

A large share of people who search for this tool want music rather than video, so the audio options come first and the section on building a listenable library further down is worth a minute of your time.

Choosing Between Audio and Video

This is the only decision that really matters, and it comes down to what you plan to do with the file.

Choose audio (MP3) if you are going to listen rather than watch — music, podcasts, lectures, interviews, language practice. Stripping the video cuts the file size by roughly ninety per cent, and audio playback lets your phone screen sleep, which uses noticeably less battery on a long journey.

Choose video (MP4) when the picture matters — tutorials where you need to see what is happening, anything visual, or clips you plan to edit later.

As a rough guide for a five-minute video:
- MP4 at 1080p: around 150 MB
- MP4 at 720p: around 75 MB
- MP4 at 360p: around 30 MB
- MP3 at 192 kbps: around 7 MB

If storage or mobile data is tight, dropping from 1080p video to MP3 is the single biggest saving available to you.

Which Bitrate for Music?

Bitrate decides how good the audio sounds and how much space it takes. Higher is not automatically better — it depends entirely on what you are converting.

320 kbps — for music you intend to keep and listen to on decent headphones. This is the highest quality most source videos actually contain.

192 kbps — the sensible default for general listening. Noticeably smaller files, and on phone speakers or earbuds most people cannot tell the difference.

128 kbps — right for anything speech-led. A spoken recording sounds essentially identical at 128 and at 320, but takes a third of the space.

One thing worth knowing: asking for a bitrate higher than the source contains does not improve anything. Source audio on YouTube is already compressed, so a higher setting produces a larger file holding exactly the same sound. Any converter promising "lossless" MP3 from a streaming video is overselling what is possible.

Building a Music Library That Stays Usable

Converting is the easy part. What decides whether your collection is still usable in six months is metadata — and it is the step almost everyone skips.

Converted files carry whatever tags the source had, which is frequently nothing at all. Music players sort by those tags rather than by filename, so a folder of perfectly-named files can still show up as one large blob of "Unknown Artist". The fields that matter are title, artist and album, plus track number if play order matters to you.

Most desktop players let you edit these directly — right-click a file, open properties or info, and type. For a batch of files, a dedicated tag editor is far quicker: MP3Tag on Windows, or Kid3 on macOS and Linux. Both are free.

Two other habits worth adopting:
- Keep one bitrate across a set. Mixing 128 kbps and 320 kbps files produces audible jumps in quality and volume between tracks.
- Use leading zeros in filenames. Naming a file 01 - Track.mp3 rather than 1 - Track.mp3 keeps things in order, because almost every device sorts alphabetically and would otherwise place track 10 before track 2.

Where Your Downloads Go

The most common question after a successful conversion is simply where the file ended up. It differs by device.

Android — almost always the Downloads folder, reachable through any file manager or your browser's download list. Music apps generally pick up new files on their own, though some need a manual library refresh before new tracks appear.

iPhone and iPad — Safari saves to the Files app under Downloads, not into Photos or Apple Music. Video files can be moved into Photos manually; audio needs an app that plays local files. This is standard iOS behaviour and not something any converter can change.

Windows, macOS and Linux — your browser's Downloads folder, and the download bar links straight to it.

If Something Does Not Work

Converters fail in a small number of predictable ways. These cover nearly all of them.

"That does not look like a YouTube link" — the pasted text is not a complete video address. Copy the full URL from your browser's address bar, or use the Share button on the YouTube app and choose Copy link. Standard links, youtu.be short links and Shorts URLs all work.

Nothing happens when you click Convert — usually a script blocker or an aggressive privacy extension. Allow scripts for this page, or try a different browser.

Conversion is taking a long time — the length of the source video is the biggest factor, followed by how busy the servers are. Peak hours are US and European evenings. A long recording converted to audio is much quicker than the same one as full-resolution video.

The download stops partway — usually an interrupted connection, which is common on mobile data. Delete the partial file before retrying, because some browsers resume into the same broken file and produce the same result again.

The file will not play — check the size first against the guide above. Anything far smaller than expected did not finish downloading, even though it may look complete in a folder listing. If the size looks right but your player refuses it, VLC opens essentially every format on every platform and is the fastest way to tell whether the problem is the file or the player.

Is Y2Mte Safe to Use?

A converter should be judged on what it asks of you. This page asks for a video link and nothing else — no email address, no account, no browser extension, and no program to install.

The genuine risks with converter sites follow a recognisable pattern, and they are worth learning once:
- A notification permission prompt on arrival. No converter has a legitimate reason to send you push notifications.
- Several download buttons where only one is real. If you cannot tell which is which, none of them deserve a click.
- "Install our app or extension for faster downloads." Extensions can read everything you do in your browser. No speed claim justifies that access.
- An .exe or .apk file when you asked for .mp3. Always check the extension before opening anything.
- A "codec required" or "player update" prompt. Modern browsers play MP4 and MP3 natively. Nothing needs updating.

On APK files specifically: converter tools are often offered as Android packages outside the Play Store. Installing one means allowing software from an unverified source, which is one of the most common ways malware reaches Android phones. There is no version of that risk worth taking for a tool that works perfectly well as a web page.

Legal Use

Convert content you own, have explicit permission to use, or that is published under a licence permitting download. Public-domain recordings and Creative Commons material are fine — YouTube marks Creative Commons licensing in the video description.

Downloading copyrighted music or video without permission is a violation in most countries regardless of which tool is used. The legitimate uses are common and real: your own uploads, lectures your institution has released for offline study, podcasts distributed for offline listening, and royalty-free media for projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Y2Mte?
Y2Mte is a free online converter that turns permitted YouTube links into MP3 audio or MP4 video files. It runs in your browser — there is nothing to install and no account to create.

Is this y2mte.com?
No. This is Softlookup's own converter of the same kind. It is not affiliated with y2mte.com or any other similarly named service, but it does the same job with nothing to install.

Is Y2Mte free?
Yes, and there is no premium tier. Every option on this page is available to everyone.

Does Y2Mte work with youtu.be and Shorts links?
Yes. Standard watch links, youtu.be short links and /shorts/ URLs are all accepted, including links copied from the YouTube app's Share button.

Which bitrate should I choose for music?
320 kbps for music you intend to keep, 192 kbps for general listening, and 128 kbps for podcasts, lectures or anything speech-led. Going above 320 kbps does not help, because the source audio is already compressed.

Why do my downloads show as "Unknown Artist"?
Converted files carry whatever tags the source had, which is often nothing. Music players sort by tags rather than filenames, so editing title, artist and album is worth the couple of minutes it takes. MP3Tag and Kid3 are free tools that handle this in bulk.

Does Y2Mte work on mobile?
Yes. It runs in any modern mobile or desktop browser — Android, iPhone, tablets and computers alike — with no app to install.

Is it legal to use Y2Mte?
Only convert content you own, have permission to use, or that is freely available for download. Downloading commercial music you do not own is not permitted.
